As Quiet As It’s Kept…It’s a phrase I’ve heard used often when I was growing up. It was always followed by some truth that was probably known by all, but rarely spoken. Toni Morrison uses it in The Bluest Eye, but she also recognized that it is probably one of those staple phrases that had become a mainstay in the African American vernacular. Morrison says, “as quiet as it’s kept most of our business, our existence here has been grotesque. It really has.” That idea is so apparent in her characters and really, I feel, in life in general. We’re so flawed and yet so uniquely beautiful as bearers of God’s image – even as sinners who have fallen into sin. I love whole stories, with all there tensions, messiness, and unpredictability. After all, it is God who is sovereign and not I. As I continue to observe life, love God and his people, and no lie, strain to include my enemies, I am sort of excited and terribly frustrated at the idea that as quiet as it’s kept, as much as I pledge to do these things, I am not exempt from being observed, analyzed, mocked, enjoyed, or misunderstood by the world myself. Well, hope I haven’t lost you…if I have just consider it as the calm before the storm because there’s so much more to life and God to be befuddled by!
Who am I?
I am basically a sinner saved by the glorious works of Christ on the Cross. I love writing and observing the world around me, taking it apart and viewing it under the light of Scripture. I’m on a quest to see truth, beauty, and goodness in all of life and I hope to share what I find with the world.
